Every year, October 29th is World Stroke Day. A day for Stroke awareness. Strokes don't discriminate. A stroke can affect anyone, at any age. About one in four people worldwide will have a stroke in his or her lifetime.
To prevent stroke, it's vital to understand your risk factors. Some risk factors — such as age, race, gender and family history — are outside of your control. But you can control other risk
factors.
-Being overweight or obese
-Physical inactivity
-Heavy or binge drinking
-Use of illegal drugs such as cocaine and methamphetamine
-High blood pressure
-Cigarette smoking or secondhand smoke exposure
-High cholesterol
-Diabetes
-Obstructive sleep apnea
-Cardiovascular disease, including heart failure, heart defects, heart infection or abnormal heart rhythm, such as atrial fibrillation
-Personal or family history of stroke, heart attack or transient ischemic attack
If you feel concerned because your pre-existing medical condition or lifestyle indicates a higher possibility of stroke, or if you have already experienced one, then this would be a good time to schedule an appointment with our acupuncture and Oriental medicine practitioner. You can discover what life changes you might need to make to improve your health and reduce your risk.
